A Private Investigation

Sara started up the stairs into the blackness. She sensed danger, couldn’t control the fear making the back of her neck tingle. Was it all in her mind? No matter. Her heart was pounding. Then she saw a shaft of light coming from the glass of her office door and sighed with relief. Nothing to worry about. Helen was there. Familiar Helen. An oasis of Helen.

“Helen, it’s me, Sara.”

She stopped short. No Helen. Had she left the lights on or.. She spun around. Someone big and strong grabbed her from behind and laid the honed edge of a knife across her throat....

Sara Scott was a private eye with a lot going for her. She could charm her way past any security guard, talk her way into any police file, shoot her way out of trouble. She knew she was good. She was determined to discover who had killed her husband.

When a sinister hit-and-run death made a routine adultery case look like something much more serious, she found her first clue-a clue that led along a trail of corpses, that led her to the highest chambers of political power, that made her the next target of the Mexican Mafia.

“Fast and entertaining.”
-The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer.

“Alexander, author of Time After Time, takes the hard-boiled school of detectives and stands it on its head: his private eye is a woman, Sara Scott, a widow with a precocious daughter, a lover, and virtually no detective experience. This, her first case, seems at first a simple investigation of martial infidelity, but the murders of her subject and several others involved with him prove it’s much more. Most important of all, bits and pieces of the unexplicated murders remind Sara alarmingly of a murder much closer to home: the unsolved murder of her own husband. Alexander’s carefully realistic novel is full of life and wit and intrigue. Sara, her child, her lover, and everyone around her are endangered by this case involving drugs and corrupt government. The success of Sara Scott makes the reader eager for more of her
adventures.”
